2021 Volkswagen Atlas and Select Models: Rear Camera Malfunction Risk
Volkswagen is recalling certain 2021 Atlas and related models because the rear view camera may malfunction during startup, showing a black screen or frozen image, reducing visibility when reversing and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product where no injuries have been reported. The rear view camera malfunction violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 and creates genuine crash risk during reversing, but without reported injury or property damage.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 32,048 units of certain 2021 model year vehicles, including the Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan, Jetta, Golf, and Arteon. The recall addresses a malfunction in the rear view camera system.
The rear view camera can malfunction during an ignition cycle, resulting in a black screen or infotainment system freeze. This prevents the driver from seeing the rear area when reversing, violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 (Rear Visibility) and increasing the risk of a collision.
All owners of affected 2021 model year vehicles are impacted. Volkswagen will notify owners and dealers will update the infotainment system software free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2020. For more information, owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
