Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Rearview Camera Software Defect Recall
Volkswagen is recalling certain 2021-2022 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles due to an infotainment system defect that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. This loss of rear visibility increases crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Loss of rearview camera visibility increases crash risk, but no injuries have been reported. This risk-of-harm situation without reported incidents qualifies as High per the rubric.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2021 and 2022 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles, along with other 2021-2022 Volkswagen model year vehicles, affecting 43,091 vehicles total. The defect is in the eMMC memory module within the infotainment system. Manufacturing defects in this module may cause the rearview camera image not to display.
When the rearview camera fails to display an image, the driver's rear visibility is reduced. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 (Rear Visibility). Loss of rear-view visibility increases the risk of a crash.
Volkswagen dealers will update the infotainment software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed in September 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 for more information. The NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline is available at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
