Chevrolet Bolt battery can catch fire when charged near full

GM is recalling certain 2020-2022 Bolt EV and 2022 Bolt EUV vehicles previously repaired under 21V-650, because diagnostic software installation may have failed, so the battery could catch fire at high charge.

NHTSA safety advisory

Park this vehicle outside

NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.

This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: a failed software installation leaves a battery fire hazard, and the source records no fires or injuries.

Plain-English summary

General Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2020-2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and 2022 Bolt EUV vehicles previously repaired under recall 21V-650. About 107 units are potentially affected.

The installation of advanced diagnostic software may have failed. As such, the high voltage battery could catch fire when charged to full or nearly full capacity.

NHTSA states that a battery fire increases the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to take interim steps: set the Target Charge Level feature to limit the charge to 90%, charge the vehicle more frequently, avoid depleting the battery below 70 miles of remaining range, and park outside after charging. Owners may contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
