Chevrolet Bolt battery diagnostic software may miss defective modules
GM is recalling certain 2020-2022 Bolt EV and 2022 Bolt EUV vehicles previously remedied under 21V-650, because diagnostic software may have been installed incorrectly and fail to detect defective battery modules.
NHTSA safety advisory
Park this vehicle outside
NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.
This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: the software may fail to flag a defective battery module, presenting a fire hazard, and the source records no fires or injuries.
