Lucid recalls 2022–2023 Air for potential loss of drive power
Software versions 2.0.64 and older in 2022–2023 Lucid Air vehicles may not respond properly to inverter failures, causing sudden loss of drive power without warning. This increases the risk of crashes.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Loss of drive power without warning is a critical safety defect with potential for serious consequences including increased crash risk. However, the source reports no injuries, deaths, or accidents to date, matching the rubric criterion for High severity: a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Lucid USA, Inc. is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 Lucid Air vehicles equipped with software versions 2.0.64 and older. The affected software may not respond properly to failures in the inverter power module, a critical component of the vehicle's electrical system.
When an inverter power module failure occurs, the software defect may fail to engage the proper shutdown procedure. Instead of safely disabling the vehicle, this can result in a sudden loss of drive power without any warning to the driver. A loss of drive power without warning increases the risk of a crash.
Lucid has released a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to address this issue. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 25, 2023. Owners should contact Lucid customer service at 1-888-995-8243 to schedule the update, or they may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
