2023 Subaru Impreza Brake Light Switch and Transmission Interlock Defect
Subaru is recalling certain 2023 Impreza vehicles due to a faulty brake light switch that may illuminate brake lights without pedal application and allow the transmission to shift out of PARK without pressing the brake pedal, creating rollaway and crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves structural vehicle safety defects (brake light switch and transmission interlock) that violate federal motor vehicle safety standards and create rollaway and crash risks. However, no injuries or crashes have been reported, making the hazard potential rather than realized.
Plain-English summary
Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2023 Impreza vehicles because the brake light switch may be improperly adjusted. This defect creates two safety hazards: the brake lights may illuminate without the brake pedal being pressed, and the vehicle may allow the transmission to shift out of the PARK position without the driver pressing the brake pedal.
These defects violate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 108 (Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment) and 102 (Trans Shift Lever Seq/Starter Interlock/Trans Braking Effect). An unintended illumination of brake lights can fail to alert other drivers of actual braking, while a vehicle that shifts out of PARK unexpectedly can roll away and increase the risk of a crash.
Approximately 4,030 vehicles are affected by this recall. Dealers will inspect the gap between the brake light switch and stopper at no cost to owners, and will adjust the switch as necessary. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed June 23, 2023.
Owners should contact Subaru at 1-844-373-6614 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
