2020-2023 CAN-AM Spyder and Ryker Motorcycles Brake Light Defect

CAN-AM is recalling 2020-2023 Spyder RT and 2022-2023 Ryker motorcycles because brake lights may remain illuminated when the brake pedal is not pressed. This can prevent other motorists from seeing actual braking and increase crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This brake light defect presents a risk-of-harm scenario where brake lights fail to effectively communicate braking intent, increasing crash risk. No injuries or incidents have been reported in the source, fitting the 'risk-of-harm without reported injury' criterion.

Plain-English summary

Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc. is recalling certain 2020-2023 CAN-AM Spyder RT and 2022-2023 CAN-AM Ryker motorcycles due to a brake light switch defect. The brake lights may remain illuminated even when the brake pedal is not pressed, which fails to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108.

When brake lights stay continuously illuminated, other motorists cannot see when the rider is actually braking, increasing crash risk.

An estimated 34,457 motorcycles are affected. Dealers will replace the brake light switch, adjust it, and/or add a spring, at no cost to owners.
