2022-2023 BMW M3 Door Locking Software Defect Recall
BMW is recalling certain 2022-2023 models due to a door locking software defect. Faulty ECU programming may prevent doors from locking while driving, increasing crash injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves failure of the automatic door locking system while the vehicle is in motion, posing a risk of injury if doors open during a crash. However, the source does not report any actual injuries or deaths, only potential risk. This meets the rubric criterion for High: risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 BMW vehicles, including the M3, M340i, 330i, 330e, 430i, and M440i models, as well as 2022-2023 i4 models. During a service visit, replacement electronic control units (ECUs) may have been installed with incorrect programming.
The faulty ECU programming affects the automatic door locking (ADL) function, causing doors to not lock as intended while the vehicle is in motion. If a door fails to lock and opens during a crash, occupants face an increased risk of injury.
BMW has mailed owner notification letters as of April 10, 2023. Owners should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule a service appointment. Dealers will update the ECU software at no charge. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
