BMW is recalling 397 vehicles because a software error may disable front passenger airbags and active headrests, increasing injury risk in crashes.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where safety restraints (airbags and active headrests) may fail to deploy, significantly increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2023 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60 vehicles equipped with the Executive Lounge Seating Package. The recall affects 397 vehicles in total.
The defect involves the front passenger seat electronic control unit (ECU) software. In certain seat monitoring conditions, the software may fail to recognize the seat position, which can disable the front passenger air bag, knee air bag, and active headrest. If these safety components are disabled, they will not deploy as intended in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger.
Dealers will reprogram the front passenger seat electronic control unit software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 10, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
