2023 BMW vehicles recalled for unintended power window and sunroof closure
BMW is recalling 2023 and some 2022 model-year vehicles for a software defect allowing power windows and sunroofs to close without the digital key present, posing a risk of injury to occupants.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No injuries or deaths are reported. The defect is a safety system malfunction that creates a theoretical risk of injury from unintended window or sunroof closure, placing it at severity score 3 (High) per the rubric for risk-of-harm products without reported harm.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2023 BMW models including the 8 Series (Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe variants), 2 Series Coupe, and Z4 vehicles, as well as 2022-2023 Z4 models. The recall affects 3,193 vehicles. The issue stems from Electronic Control Unit (ECU) software that may remain active after the digital key is removed from the vehicle, allowing the power windows and sunroof to be closed without the key present. This violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 118 requirements for power-operated window systems.
When power windows or sunroof close without the key present, occupants inside the vehicle face an increased risk of injury from unintended entrapment or contact with the closing mechanisms.
BMW dealers will update the affected vehicles' ECU software free of charge. Until the update is completed, the digital key function via cellular service and Wi-Fi capability will be deactivated. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed beginning April 11, 2023. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
