Certain BMW Vehicles: Sunroof May Close Without Key Fob Present
BMW is recalling 2019-2023 X5, X6, X7, and 4 Series vehicles because the sunroof may close without the key fob inside, creating injury risk. Dealers will reprogram the control unit free of charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Structural vehicle safety defect involving unintended sunroof closure with documented injury risk potential. However, no illnesses or injuries have been reported, and no Class I designation is provided. Fits the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America is recalling certain 2021-2022 BMW X6 vehicles and other model year 2019-2023 BMW vehicles including the X5, X7, and 4 Series Gran Coupe. These vehicles have a roof function control unit that may be programmed incorrectly.
The defect allows the sunroof to close without the key fob present inside the vehicle. This creates a safety risk and violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 118, which sets requirements for power-operated window systems. Unintended sunroof closure can increase the risk of injury to occupants.
BMW dealers will reprogram the roof function control unit at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 20, 2022. For service, owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
