2022-2023 BMW iX and i4 Recalled for Battery Software Electrical Power Loss

BMW recalls certain 2022-2023 iX, i4, and 2023 i7 models due to a high voltage battery ECU software issue that may interrupt electrical power and suddenly disable drive power.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: No deaths or injuries have been reported. However, the defect involves potential loss of electrical power during vehicle operation, which could result in sudden loss of drive power and increased crash risk. This qualifies as a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, warranting a High severity rating.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX (including xDrive40, xDrive50, and M60 models), i4 (including eDrive35, eDrive40, and M50 models), and 2023 i7 xDrive60 vehicles. The affected vehicles' high voltage battery electronic control unit (ECU) software may malfunction and cause an interruption of electrical power. An interruption of electrical power may result in a sudden loss of drive power, which increases the risk of a crash.

BMW will remedy this defect at no cost by updating the high voltage battery ECU software at authorized dealerships. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning February 10, 2023. Owners should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule their software update.
