2022-2023 BMW IX and i4 High-Voltage Battery Fire Risk Recall

Certain 2022-2023 BMW IX and 2022 i4 vehicles are recalled due to high-voltage batteries that may develop internal damage and short-circuit, posing a fire risk. Owners should not drive or charge the vehicle until the battery is replaced.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural electrical defect with potential for fire. No fires, injuries, or deaths have been reported. The hazard is theoretical but serious, meeting the rubric criterion for risk-of-harm products without reported incidents.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2022-2023 BMW IX xDrive50 and IX M60 models, and 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 models. The high-voltage battery in these vehicles may have internal damage that results in an electrical short-circuit. A short-circuit in the battery increases the risk of fire.

Approximately 367 vehicles are affected by this recall. BMW advises owners not to drive or charge their vehicles and to park them outside and away from structures until the remedy is complete.

BMW dealers will replace the high-voltage battery free of charge. Initial owner notification letters were mailed in September 2022. A second notification was sent in December 2022 with remedy availability information. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
