2022-2023 BMW I4 Recalled for High Voltage Battery Charging Unit Failure

BMW recalls certain 2022-2023 I4, iX, and i760 models due to a defective high voltage battery charging unit that may not have been properly assembled, potentially causing engine stall while driving.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting the electrical propulsion system that could cause engine stall while driving. However, no crashes or injuries have been reported, so the actual harm remains theoretical.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 eDrive40, i4 M50, and 2023 i760 xDrive hybrid electric vehicles. The high voltage battery combined charging unit (CCU) in these vehicles may not have been manufactured correctly, with improperly connected or assembled components inside.

An improperly assembled CCU can interrupt electrical power while the vehicle is being driven, causing the engine to stall. This increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the affected high voltage battery combined charging unit at no charge to owners. BMW began sending owner notification letters in August 2023. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
