2020 BMW X4 Engine Software Defect Disables Braking Assist

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2020 model BMW M340i, M340i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, X3 M40i, X4 M40i, and 745Le xDrive vehicles, as well as 2019-2021 Z4 M40i and 2020-2021 Toyota Supra vehicles, manufactured with a defect in the engine management software.

During engine start, the engine management software may cause a loss of braking assist, which is the power assistance system that helps reduce the braking force needed from the driver. However, full mechanical braking without power assist remains available. Loss of braking assist can increase the risk of a crash.

A total of 50,024 vehicles are affected by this recall. BMW began notifying owners on September 17, 2021.
