BMW vehicles with defective seat belt warning software recalled

BMW is recalling 2019-2022 330i, M340i, and other models due to receiver audio module software that may fail to generate proper seat belt warnings, increasing crash injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a vehicle safety system defect involving failure of audible seat belt warnings that increases injury risk in crashes. However, no illnesses, injuries, or deaths have been reported in the source, placing this at Score 3 per the rubric criterion that theoretical hazards without reported harm score at most 3.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2019-2022 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, 2022 430i Coupe, 2021-2022 430i, M440i Convertible, and 2020-2022 228i xDrive Gran Coupe vehicles. The receiver audio module control unit software may fail to properly generate audible seat belt warnings to drivers. This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208 (Occupant Crash Protection).

Without proper seat belt warning alerts, drivers may not fasten their seat belts before driving. An audible chime that does not properly alert the driver increases the risk of injury in a crash.

BMW dealers will update the receiver audio module software at no cost. Owner notification letters were mailed on October 12, 2023. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
