Porsche Taycan Seat Belt Warning System Malfunction Recall
Porsche is recalling 2020-2023 Taycan models due to a malfunctioning seat belt warning system that may fail to alert unbelted passengers. Dealers will update the instrument cluster software free of charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a malfunctioning safety system (seat belt warning) that fails to alert unbelted occupants, creating increased injury risk in crashes. No injuries or incidents have been reported, and the defect is resolved by a software update rather than a structural vehicle defect, placing it in the high-risk category where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Porsche Cars North America is recalling certain 2020 through 2023 Porsche Taycan vehicles, including the Taycan, Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo, Taycan Turbo S, Taycan GTS, Taycan 4S Cross Turismo, and Taycan 4 Cross Turismo models. Approximately 130 vehicles are affected.
The instrument cluster electrical system in these vehicles may malfunction such that when a passenger is unbelted, the seat belt warning light and audible chime will not activate. This failure violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, which requires proper occupant crash protection systems.
A malfunctioning seat belt warning system may not alert the passenger to buckle their seat belt, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Porsche dealers will update the instrument cluster software free of charge. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed beginning May 16, 2023. Owners can contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
