2020-2022 Porsche Taycan Brake Warning Indicator Defect Recall
Porsche is recalling 2020-2022 Taycan vehicles because the brake pad wear warning indicator displays an incorrect color, potentially causing drivers to misinterpret the warning and drive on worn brake pads with reduced braking performance.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm recall involving a safety-critical brake system warning indicator. Although no injuries have been reported, an incorrect brake warning could lead drivers to overlook brake maintenance and operate a vehicle with reduced braking performance, increasing crash risk.
Plain-English summary
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2020-2022 Porsche Taycan vehicles. The instrument cluster displays an incorrect warning indicator with an incorrect color when notifying owners of worn brake pads. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 135 (Light Vehicle Brake Systems) and 101 (Control and Displays).
The incorrect warning may be misinterpreted by drivers, resulting in continued driving on worn brake pads without proper attention to brake maintenance. Worn brake pads can reduce brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.
Approximately 71 vehicles are affected. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 14, 2023. Porsche dealers will update the instrument cluster software free of charge.
Owners should contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243 (recall number APA5) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153). More information is available at www.nhtsa.gov.
