2023 IC CE School Bus Steering Gear May Fracture, Causing Loss of Control

Navistar is recalling certain 2022-2023 IC CE School Buses because their steering gears may have been assembled incorrectly and could fracture, causing a loss of steering control and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: This is classified as Severe because it involves a structural vehicle safety component (steering gear) with a failure mode (fracture) that causes loss of steering control, directly increasing crash risk. Although no injuries or deaths have been reported, the hazard meets the rubric criterion for structural vehicle defects.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 IC CE School Buses (model CESB). The recalled vehicles may have steering gears that were assembled incorrectly during manufacturing.

The improperly assembled steering gears may fracture. If a steering gear fractures, it can cause a loss of steering control, which increases the risk of a crash. This defect affects an estimated 3,570 vehicles.

Owners of affected vehicles should contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Dealers will inspect the steering gear serial numbers and replace the steering gears as necessary at no charge. Interim notification letters were mailed to owners on August 15, 2022, and replacement parts were expected to become available in mid-October 2022.

Alternatively, owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
