Mercedes-Benz Vehicles: Emergency Calling System Disabled by Software Error
Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling certain 2017-2022 models after a communication module software error disabled the emergency eCall system. Owners can receive a free software update via over-the-air delivery or at a dealer.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a software defect affecting a critical safety system (emergency calling), creating a risk of harm if the system is needed during an emergency. However, no injuries or deaths have been reported, and a free software fix is readily available, placing this at High severity per the rubric criterion of risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain 2017-2022 model year vehicles including CLA-Class, GLA-Class, GLE-Class, GLS-Class, SLC-Class, A-Class, AMG GT-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, GLC-Class, CLS-Class, GLB-Class, and G-Class vehicles. An error in the communication module's SIM card software can cause a mobile network connection failure.
This software error disables the vehicle's emergency call (eCall) system. A disabled eCall system prevents vehicle occupants from contacting emergency services in an emergency, potentially delaying emergency responders and increasing the risk of injury.
The communication module software will be updated free of charge through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by visiting an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. Owner notification letters have been mailed in phases, with additional letters scheduled through September 2024.
Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz USA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information. Additional details are available at www.nhtsa.gov.
