2021 International Trucks Recalled for Air Brake Check Valve Manufacturing Defect

Navistar recalls 2021 International trucks for defective air brake check valves that may cause unintended brake application and increase crash risk. The SC-3 valve's retainer is not properly seated.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a defect in a critical safety system (air brakes) with potential for serious harm (unintended brake application and crash risk). No injuries or deaths have been reported, placing this in the high-risk category where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain 2021 International LT, RH, MV, and HV vehicles. The SC-3 single check valve in the air brake system contains a retainer that may not be properly seated. When not properly seated, the retainer may not provide adequate source air isolation when pressure is applied, violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121. As a result, unintended spring brake application may occur, increasing the risk of a crash.

Approximately 845 vehicles are affected. Owners were notified by letter on May 28, 2021. Navistar will replace the defective SC-3 check valves at no charge through authorized dealers.

For additional information, owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
