GMC Recalls 2018 Terrain Models Due to Air Bag Module Software Defect
General Motors is recalling 2018 GMC Terrain vehicles because the air bag control module may fail to power down, potentially preventing air bag deployment in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the air bag system may fail to deploy, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury risk.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain 2018 GMC Terrain vehicles. The recall addresses a defect in the sensing diagnostic module (SDM), which is responsible for sensing a crash and deploying the necessary air bags. The SDM may not power down correctly when the vehicle is shut off, causing it to be inoperative when the vehicle is restarted.
If the SDM becomes inoperative, it will not detect a crash or command the necessary air bag deployment. This failure increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash. The recall affects 88,503 vehicles.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SDM with updated software free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2018. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
