GM Recalls 40,683 Vehicles for Air Bag and Seat Belt Software Defect
General Motors is recalling 40,683 vehicles from 2014-2017 because a software error may prevent front air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where safety systems (air bags and seat belt pretensioners) may fail to deploy in a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury risk.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling 40,683 model year 2014-2017 vehicles, including Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC models, due to a defect in the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software. The recall affects vehicles that were previously remedied for recall 16V-651 but may not have received the complete software update necessary to fix the condition.
Without the correct software update, certain driving conditions may cause the SDM to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners would not deploy in the event of a crash. A failure of these safety systems to deploy increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software at no charge. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact their respective brand customer service lines or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline for more information.
