Mitsubishi Mirage Recall: Air Bags May Fail to Deploy in Crash
Mitsubishi is recalling 2014-2018 Mirage vehicles because the air bag system may disable itself due to sensor errors, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where safety-critical air bags may fail to deploy, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'structural vehicle defect' or 'significant injury' risk.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2014-2018 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles. The recall involves the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The internal acceleration sensor in the SRS ECU can misinterpret vibrations from poor road conditions or a flat tire as a sensor error. This misinterpretation can disable the air bags, preventing them from deploying in a crash.
Air bags that do not deploy as designed in a crash increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. The recall affects 83,555 vehicles. The recall began on November 10, 2017.
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SRS-ECU software free of charge. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-17-006.
