Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling approximately 55,899 model year 2014-2015 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles manufactured between July 27, 2013, and September 2, 2015. The recall addresses a defect where water and salt soaking through the carpet can cause corrosion to a wiring connector in a junction box behind the driver's left kick panel.
In the event of a crash, this corrosion could delay the deployment of the frontal air bags, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and front seat passenger. Dealers will inspect the affected connectors, replace any found to be corroded, and install a waterproof sheet to prevent future corrosion. These repairs will be performed free of charge.
The recall is expected to begin in February 2016. Owners may contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at 1-888-648-7820 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Mitsubishi's recall number for this action is SR-16-001.
