Mitsubishi Recalls 2013 Outlander Sport for Air Bag Wiring Defect
Mitsubishi is recalling 2013 Outlander Sport vehicles with leather seats because improperly routed air bag wiring may prevent the driver's air bag from deploying in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a safety component (air bag) may fail to deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of injury, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured between July 20, 2012, and May 29, 2013. The recall applies specifically to vehicles equipped with leather seats. In these vehicles, the driver-side seat-mounted air bag wiring may have been improperly routed during the installation of the leather seat covers.
If the wiring is routed incorrectly, using the seat height adjustment feature may damage the wiring. This damage can cause the air bag warning light to illuminate. More critically, if the wiring is damaged, the driver-side seat-mounted air bag may fail to deploy in the event of a crash, which increases the risk of injury to the driver.
The recall began on February 28, 2014. Dealers will inspect the wiring of the driver-side seat-mounted air bag and re-route the wire if necessary. If the wire is found to be damaged, the seat-mounted air bag will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners may contact Mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037 or visit www.safercar.gov for more information.
