Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured between June 11, 2012, and September 11, 2012. The recall involves 4,539 vehicles that fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 108 and 114 regarding lamps and theft protection.
The defect causes the brake stop lamps to illuminate continuously or intermittently, which may prevent other drivers from knowing when the vehicle is stopping. Additionally, the shift lever could be moved out of Park without depressing the brake pedal, potentially allowing the vehicle to roll and cause personal injury.
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will correct the installation of the stop lamp switch free of charge. The recall began on April 18, 2013. Owners may contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
