Mitsubishi Mirage and i-MiEV Recalled for Air Bag Deployment Issues
Mitsubishi is recalling 2014 Mirages and 2012 i-MiEVs because increased resistance in the impact sensor may delay or prevent air bag deployment in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where air bags may fail to deploy, significantly increasing the risk of occupant injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles and 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV vehicles. The recall covers 13,558 vehicles manufactured between July 27, 2013, and November 20, 2013, for the Mirage, and between October 28, 2011, and September 7, 2012, for the i-MiEV.
The defect involves increased resistance in the impact sensor for the air bag system. In the event of a crash that necessitates deployment of the frontal, side, and/or curtain air bags when the SRS warning is illuminated, the frontal air bag may have a delayed deployment, and the side and curtain air bags may not deploy at all. This condition increases the risk of occupant injury in a crash.
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected impact sensors free of charge. The recall began on November 5, 2015. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-15-011. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
