Mercedes-Benz Recalls 2017 E-Class Models Due to Air Bag Defect

Mercedes-Benz is recalling 2017 E300 and E43 AMG vehicles because the front passenger air bag may fail to deploy due to an incorrectly installed sensor.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the air bag may fail to deploy, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain 2017 E300, E300 4Matic, and E43 AMG vehicles. The recall involves a defect in the front passenger occupant detection control unit, which may have been incorrectly installed. This error can cause the system to misclassify the occupant, such as identifying an adult as a child seat, which deactivates the front passenger air bag.

If the front passenger air bag does not deploy as intended during a crash, it can increase the risk of injury. The recall began in March 2017. Dealers will inspect the routing of the pressure hose of the seat occupancy detection control unit and replace the pressure hose and seat occupancy detection mat if necessary, free of charge.
