Mercedes-Benz Recalls SUVs for Front Passenger Air Bag Defect

Mercedes-Benz is recalling specific 2016-2017 SUVs because the front passenger air bag may not deploy due to a calibration error.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (air bag) that may fail to deploy, creating a risk of injury in a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities.

Plain-English summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 GL350, GL550, GLE350, GLE43 AMG, GLE450, GLE300d, GLE350d, GLE400, GLE550e, GLE63 AMG, GLE63S AMG, and GLS63 AMG vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between April 23, 2014, and May 10, 2016.

The front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) calibration may be incorrect. This can cause the system to incorrectly classify the occupant as a child seat, which deactivates the front passenger air bag. If the air bag does not deploy as necessary in a crash, the front passenger has an increased risk of injury.

Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software free of charge. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
