What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (air bag failure) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for theoretical injury risk without confirmed incidents.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300, E300 4Matic, E43 AMG 4Matic, E400 4Matic, E63S AMG 4Matic+, and 2019 CLS450 4Matic vehicles. The recall addresses a defect in the Occupant Classification System (OCS), which may not be properly calibrated. This miscalibration can result in the front passenger air bag failing to deactivate if a child seat is placed in the front seat.
If the front passenger air bag is not deactivated while a child seat is in the front seat, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash. The recall began on November 26, 2018.
Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion free of charge. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
