GM Recalls Vehicles for Ignition Key Removal and Rollaway Risk
General Motors is recalling specific Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles because the ignition key may be removed without the transmission in Park, creating a rollaway hazard.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a risk-of-harm product defect (rollaway) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Buick Verano and 2016 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles, as well as specific 2011-2016 Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC models that may have been serviced with defective replacement parts. The defect involves the electronic park lock lever, which may allow the ignition key to be removed even when the transmission is not in the Park position. This failure means the vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
The affected vehicles include 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox, 2011 Buick Regal, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, 2011-2013 GMC Terrain, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2013 Buick Encore, and 2016-2017 Buick Verano. If the key is removed without the transmission in Park, the vehicle may roll away as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the key cylinder lock housing free of charge. The recall began on October 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC at 1-800-462-8782. GM's recall numbers for this action are 50490 and 50491.
