Coach and Equipment Recalls Transit Buses with Defective Wheelchair Lifts
Coach and Equipment is recalling 2006-2014 transit buses equipped with certain Ricon wheelchair lifts. The lifts may have pivot holes that allow bearings to move, risking platform failure.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a vehicle component that could cause the wheelchair lift platform to fall, increasing the risk of injury to the operator. No injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Coach and Equipment Mfg Corp. is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Alley Cat, Condor LT, Metro Lite, Pegasus, and Phoenix transit buses. These vehicles were manufactured between January 1, 2006, and September 18, 2014, and are equipped with specific Ricon Corporation wheelchair lifts (models S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510).
The affected lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big. This defect allows the bearings to move out of position. If the bearings move, the stowed platform may have excessive movement, resulting in failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheelchair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.
Coach and Equipment will notify owners, and Ricon dealers will inspect the link arms for damage or displaced bearings and the platform for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced free of charge. The recall began on December 18, 2015. Owners may contact Coach & Equipment customer service at 1-800-724-8464 or Ricon Customer Service at 1-800-322-8284. Note that vehicles that received a similar recall remedy in 2014 are still affected by this recall.
