Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the platform may fall on an operator, but the source text does not report any actual injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for unreported injury risks.
Plain-English summary
Coach and Equipment Mfg Corp. is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Metro Lite, 2015 Pegasus, and 2014-2015 Phoenix buses. These vehicles were manufactured between October 2014 and November 2015 and are equipped with specific Ricon wheelchair lifts (models S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510). The recall affects 255 vehicles.
The defect involves the platform side plate of the wheelchair lifts, which may crack. Additionally, the lifts have folding link arms with pivot holes that may be too large, allowing bearings to move out of position. If the platform side plates crack or the platform mounting fails due to displaced bearings, the lift platform can separate from the lift and rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the vehicle's doors are opened, the platform may fall onto the lift operator, increasing their risk of injury.
Coach and Equipment will notify owners, and Ricon dealers will inspect the link arms for damage or displaced bearings and inspect the platform for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2016. Owners may contact Coach and Equipment customer service at 1-800-724-8464 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
