GM Recalls 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Vehicles for Air Bag Wiring Defect
General Motors is recalling 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles because a misrouted wiring harness may disable the driver-side curtain air bag, increasing injury risk in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a safety system (air bag) may fail to deploy, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural vehicle defects.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles manufactured between January 4, 2010, and June 23, 2010. The recall affects 59,474 vehicles. The issue involves an improperly routed Side-Impact Sensor (SIS) wiring harness located in the driver side front door.
The misrouted wiring harness could cause an electrical short that disables the driver side curtain air bag. If the air bag is disabled, it will not deploy in a crash where deployment is necessary, which increases the risk of injury to the driver.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the sensor's wiring in the driver's door and make repairs as necessary at no charge. The recall began on September 8, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
