Prevost Recalls 2009-2011 Motorcoaches Due to Fire Suppression Tank Defect

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fire suppression failure) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Prevost Cars, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 XL2, XL2 Shells, X3 Shell Converted Coaches, and X3 motorcoaches manufactured between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2011. The recall affects 80 vehicles equipped with an automatic fire suppression system (AFSS) pressure tank located in the engine compartment.

The pressure relief valve on the tank may not withstand the temperatures in the engine compartment, which can result in the venting of the extinguishing agent. If the tank has previously vented, the system would not be functional to help extinguish a fire, increasing the risk of injury.

Prevost will notify owners, and dealers will relocate the tank free of charge. Owners were mailed interim notices on February 2, 2015, and a second notice for owners to obtain the remedy was mailed on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Prevost customer service at 1-877-773-8678 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
