Prevost Recalls 98 Buses Due to Fire Suppression System Defect

Prevost is recalling 98 model year 2008-2010 buses because the fire suppression system may activate without a fire, causing an unplanned stop and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a defect that causes an unplanned stop, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for significant injury/property-damage reports or structural vehicle defects.

Plain-English summary

Prevost Cars, Inc. is recalling 98 model year 2008-2010 H3-45, model year 2009-2010 X3-45, and model year 2009 MTH XLII-45E vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with Volvo D13 engines and an Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System (AFSS).

The AFSS linear thermal detector may come into contact with or rub against brackets or clamps. If this occurs, the AFSS may activate with no fire present, triggering the stop engine feature. This brings the vehicle to an unplanned stop, increasing the risk of a crash.

The safety recall began in July 2012. Prevost will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and secure the linear thermal detector free of charge. Owners may contact Prevost Car Inc., Service Department toll-free at 1-866-870-2046 or 1-418-831-2046.
