Prevost Recalls 2013 Buses Due to Fire Suppression System Defect

Prevost is recalling 2013 X3-45 and XLII-45E buses because a fire detection wire may chafe, causing the engine to stop unexpectedly and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The defect causes an unplanned engine stop that increases the risk of a crash, which fits the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Prevost Cars, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013 X3-45 and MTH XLII-45E vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with Volvo D13 engines and an automatic fire detection and suppression system (AFSS). The recall involves 15 affected units.

The linear thermal detector wire in the AFSS may come into contact with or chafe against its supporting tie cables. If the wire chafes, it may cause the AFSS to activate without a fire present. This activation triggers the stop engine feature, bringing the vehicle to an unplanned stop and increasing the risk of a crash.

Prevost will notify owners, and dealers will add a protection cloth to the linear thermal detector wire at the location of the tie cable free of charge. The safety recall began on September 27, 2012. Owners may contact Prevost Car Inc. service department toll-free at 1-866-870-2046 or 1-418-831-2046.
