GM Recalls 2014 Chevrolet Sonic Vehicles for Air Bag Defect
General Motors is recalling 2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles because a steering column electrical issue may limit air bag deployment in severe crashes.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (air bag deployment failure) that increases the risk of injury in a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles manufactured between July 28, 2014, and August 1, 2014. The recall involves a potential loss of electrical connection in the steering column. This defect may cause the driver's frontal air bag to deploy only the first stage instead of the intended first and second stages during a severe crash.
If the second stage of the air bag does not deploy, the driver faces an increased risk of injury during a crash. The recall began in October 2014. Dealers will test the terminals in the IP harness clock spring coil connector and replace any loose terminals free of charge.
Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. GM's number for this recall is 14537.
