Starcraft Recalls 2010-2011 School Buses Due to Seat Latch Defect

Starcraft is recalling 517 school buses and activity vehicles because seat cushions may not latch properly, posing a crash injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where seat cushions may fail to latch, posing a risk of injury in a crash and interfering with emergency egress, but no injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

Starcraft Bus is recalling certain model year 2010 and 2011 Prodigy and Quest school buses and MFSAB activity vehicles manufactured between April 12, 2011, and June 6, 2011. These vehicles are equipped with C. E. White self-latching seat cushions where the mechanism used to retain the cushion to the frame may fail to activate. As a result, the seats do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 222 regarding school bus passenger seating and crash protection.

The defect presents a safety hazard because vehicle occupants may be injured in a crash if the seat cushion flips up out of place. Additionally, out-of-position seat cushions could interfere with emergency egress from the vehicle. A total of 517 vehicles are affected by this recall.

Starcraft will notify owners, and dealers will repair the buses free of charge. The safety recall began on January 9, 2012. Owners may contact Starcraft Bus at 1-800-348-7440 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
