Starcraft Prodigy and Quest School Buses Recalled for Rear Door Latch Defect

Starcraft Bus is recalling 2008-2011 Prodigy and Quest school buses and activity vehicles because the rear emergency exit door handle may bind, making it difficult to open in an emergency.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (emergency exit failure) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products.

Plain-English summary

Starcraft Bus is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2011 Prodigy and Quest school buses and MFSAB activity vehicles manufactured between December 8, 2008, and September 16, 2011. The recall affects vehicles equipped with a Challenger Door rear emergency exit door. A total of 1,792 vehicles are affected by this campaign.

The defect involves insufficient lubrication on the rear door handle latch mechanism, which may cause the handle to bind. This requires a great amount of force to open the rear door, causing the vehicles to fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 217 regarding bus emergency exits. In an emergency, occupants may be unable to open the rear door, hindering egress and possibly resulting in injury.

Starcraft Bus will notify owners, and dealers will repair the buses free of charge. The safety recall began on January 10, 2012. Owners may contact Starcraft Bus at 1-800-348-7440 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
