Great Dane Recalls 2011 Trailers Due to Brake Slack Adjuster Defect

Great Dane is recalling certain 2011 Semi Van and Reefer trailers because defective brake slack adjusters could crack, causing loss of braking and a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that could cause loss of braking and result in a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Great Dane Limited Partnership is recalling certain model year 2011 Semi Van and Reefer trailers manufactured between October 15, 2010, and January 31, 2011. These vehicles are equipped with Gunite automatic air brake slack adjusters that may have structural integrity issues.

The defect is caused by incomplete "knitting" of the iron during the casting process, which can lead to inadequate structural integrity in the slack adjuster housing. This weakness could cause the housing to break at the handle under normal operating loads or crack under normal braking conditions. Such a failure could result in a loss of braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Owners should contact Accuride at 1-800-677-3786 to arrange for the remedy. Accuride/Gunite will replace the subject slack adjusters free of charge. The safety recall began on April 20, 2011. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit safercar.gov for more information.
