Utility VS2RA Trailers Recalled for Brake Slack Adjuster Defect

Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company is recalling certain model year 2011 VS2RA heavy-duty trucks manufactured between December 2010 and March 2011. These vehicles are equipped with Gunite automatic slack adjusters that may have inadequate structural integrity due to an incomplete "knitting" of the iron during the casting process.
The defect could cause the slack adjuster housing to break at the handle under normal operating loads. If the slack adjusters crack under normal braking conditions, it could result in a loss of braking, which could lead to a vehicle crash.
Utility Trailer will notify owners, and dealers will replace the subject slack adjusters free of charge. The safety recall was expected to begin during March 2011. Owners may also contact Gunite at 1-800-677-3786 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
