Rosa Trailers Recall 2011 Models Due to Brake Component Defect

Rosa Trailer Mfg is recalling 2011 trailers equipped with Gunite automatic slack adjusters because the housing may break, reducing braking capacity.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the braking system that could cause loss of brake function and result in a crash, meeting the criteria for a structural vehicle defect.

Plain-English summary

Rosa Trailer Mfg is recalling certain model year 2011 trailers manufactured between October 10, 2010, and January 31, 2011. These vehicles are equipped with Gunite automatic slack adjusters. The recall is due to a manufacturing defect where incomplete "knitting" of the iron during casting can result in inadequate structural integrity of the slack adjuster housing.

If the slack adjuster housing breaks at the handle under normal operating loads, the wheel brake attached to it will no longer function. This causes reduced braking capacity for the vehicle. If the defective component is mounted on the steer axle, the vehicle may pull to one side, potentially resulting in a crash.

Rosa Trailer will notify owners, and dealers will replace the slack adjusters free of charge. The safety recall began in mid-February 2012. Owners may contact Rosa Trailers at 1-715-478-3435 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
