Transcraft Recalls 2010-2011 Platform Trailers Due to Brake Defect

Transcraft is recalling 2010-2011 Platform semi-trailers because defective automatic slack adjusters may crack, causing loss of braking and potential crashes.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the braking system that could cause loss of braking and result in a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a structural vehicle defect or significant injury risk.

Plain-English summary

Transcraft Corporation is recalling certain model year 2010 and 2011 Platform semi-trailers manufactured between October 15, 2010, and January 31, 2011. These vehicles are equipped with Gunite automatic slack adjusters that may have inadequate structural integrity due to an incomplete "knitting" of the iron during the casting process.

The defect can cause the slack adjuster housing to break at the handle under normal operating loads. If the slack adjusters crack under normal braking conditions, it could result in a loss of braking, which could lead to a vehicle crash.

Transcraft will notify owners, and the slack adjusters will be replaced free of charge. The safety recall began on September 27, 2011. Owners may contact Accuride at 1-812-962-5000 or Transcraft at 1-877-489-9020. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit safercar.gov.
