Plain-English summary

Accuride Corporation is recalling certain Gunite automatic slack adjusters manufactured between October 15, 2010, and January 31, 2011. These parts were sold as aftermarket equipment and installed as original equipment in various heavy trucks. The recall began on April 5, 2011.

The defect involves an incomplete "knitting" of the iron during the casting process, which can result in inadequate structural integrity of the slack adjuster housing. Under normal operating loads, the housing could break at the handle. If this occurs, the wheel brake attached to the slack adjuster would no longer function, causing reduced braking capacity. If the part is mounted on the steer axle, the vehicle could pull to one side, potentially resulting in a crash.

Accuride will notify owners of record for the aftermarket equipment, and dealers will replace any affected slack adjusters free of charge. Accuride is working with vehicle manufacturers to identify and notify vehicle owners. Owners may contact their vehicle manufacturer or Accuride at 1-812-962-5000.
