Etnyre Recalls 2012 Trailers Due to Slack Adjuster Housing Defect

E.D. Etnyre & Co. is recalling 2012 asphalt, heavy haul, and live bottom trailers because defective slack adjusters may crack, causing loss of braking and potential crashes.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (slack adjuster housing) that can cause loss of braking and result in a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

E.D. Etnyre & Co. is recalling certain model year 2012 asphalt tanker trailers, heavy haul trailers, and live bottom trailers. These vehicles were manufactured between November 2010 and April 2011 and are equipped with Gunite Automatic Slack Adjusters.

The recall is due to incomplete "knitting" of the iron during the casting process, which can result in inadequate structural integrity of the slack adjuster housing. This defect could cause the housing to break at the handle under normal operating loads or crack under normal braking conditions, potentially leading to a loss of braking and a vehicle crash.

Etnyre has notified owners, and all defective slack adjusters were replaced free of charge. The recall began in April 2011. Owners may contact Etnyre at 1-800-995-2116 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
