Great Dane Trailer Recall for Potential Wheel Separation Risk

Great Dane is recalling 2007-2009 semi-trailer vans due to improperly torqued spindle nuts that could cause wheel separation and loss of vehicle control.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (axle assembly) that could lead to wheel separation and a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Great Dane Limited Partnership is recalling certain 2007 through 2009 semi-trailer vans equipped with ArvinMeritor TL axles. These specific axles were shipped between April 2005 and July 2008. The recall addresses a defect where the spindle nut may not have been properly torqued or may not have been torqued at all.

This defect allows for excessive end-play in the wheel-end system, which could progress to a wheel separating from the vehicle. If a wheel separates, the driver's ability to control the vehicle is reduced, which could result in a vehicle crash.

Great Dane will notify owners, and ArvinMeritor will perform the necessary repairs free of charge. The safety recall began on January 31, 2011. Owners may contact Great Dane Customer Service at 1-877-369-3493 or ArvinMeritor at 1-248-435-1725 for more information.
