IC Bus school buses recalled for ABS warning light failure

IC Bus school buses (2021–2024) are being recalled because the anti-lock brake system warning light fails to illuminate during malfunctions, preventing drivers from being alerted and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product (school bus brake system safety) where no actual crashes, injuries, or deaths have been reported. The warning light failure prevents drivers from detecting ABS malfunctions, creating a theoretical but significant crash risk, meeting the High severity criterion.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain IC Bus school buses from model years 2021–2024. The affected vehicles include the RE, CE, and EV models. These buses have a defect in the anti-lock brake system (ABS) where the warning indicator light does not remain illuminated when an ABS malfunction occurs during vehicle operation.

Approximately 19,376 vehicles are affected by this recall. The defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121 (Air Brake Systems).

The consequence of this defect is that the ABS indicator light will not alert the driver when an ABS malfunction occurs, which could increase the risk of a crash.

To resolve the issue, Navistar will provide a free software update that will be installed by authorized dealers. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 24, 2023. Owners may contact Navistar's customer service at 1-800-448-7825, or call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
