2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV Electronic Stability Control Warning Light Failure
General Motors is recalling 1,191 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV vehicles because a faulty electronic stability control system may not display a warning light, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect in a safety-critical system (electronic stability control). However, no injuries, crashes, or hospitalizations have been reported. The hazard remains theoretical—an increased risk of future accidents. Per the rubric, a vehicle defect without reported harm qualifies as High severity.
Plain-English summary
General Motors is recalling approximately 1,191 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV electric vehicles due to a software malfunction in the electronic stability control (ESC) system. When the ESC system malfunctions, the warning light that should notify the driver may not illuminate on the next vehicle start-up. This failure violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 126 (Electronic Stability Control Systems).
Drivers may not realize the ESC system has malfunctioned if the warning light does not illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash. The ESC system improves vehicle stability and helps prevent accidents, so an undetected malfunction could compromise safety.
General Motors will repair the issue free of charge by updating the electronic brake control module (EBCM) software. The update will be performed by a Chevrolet or GMC dealer or delivered through an over-the-air software update. Owner notification letters were mailed October 15, 2025. Owners should contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's internal recall number is N252515340.
